7 day Gorillas and Golden Monkey Trekking in Uganda

This 7 day signature safari centers on gorilla and golden monkey tracking in Uganda's southwest, combining thrilling wildlife encounters with comfortable eco-lodges and scenic drives. The route is designed for efficiency, leveraging the proximity of Mgahinga and Bwindi parks. Pickups are available from either Entebbe International Airport (EBB) in Uganda or Kigali International Airport (KGL) in Rwanda, as Kigali often means shorter transfers (cutting down on bumpy Ugandan roads). We'll use private 4x4 vehicles for all ground transport, with options for domestic flights to minimize drive time.

Pick Up description:
From Entebbe (EBB): Your driver-guide meets you at arrivals with a sign (e.g., "Welcome Enock"). On Day 1, opt for a 1-hour charter flight to Kisoro Airstrip (near Mgahinga) or a full-day drive (8-10 hours) south via Kampala, the equator crossing (photo stop), Masaka's pineapple fields, and Kabale's rolling hills.
Route: Entebbe → Kisoro/Mgahinga (base for golden monkeys) → 4-5 hour drive to Bwindi (for gorillas) → Return north to Entebbe on Day 7 (flight or 8-10 hour drive with lunch stops).

From Kigali (KGL): Simpler entry to meet your guide at arrivals, then a 4-5 hour drive northwest through Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park area, crossing the Cyanika border into Uganda (we help you handle visas/immigration but you incur the charge).
Route: Kigali → Musanze → Kisoro/Mgahinga → Bwindi → Back to Kigali on Day 7 (4-5 hours) or to Entebbe if preferred (additional 5-6 hours or flight).

The loop between Mgahinga and Bwindi is about 200km on winding, scenic tarmac and dirt roads, expect terraced farms, lakes, and volcano views. All transfers include AC vehicles, Wi-Fi hotspots, snacks, and bottled water. Permits (gorilla: $800/person, golden monkey: $100/person) are secured in advance by us. Total trip mileage: Around 600-800km round-trip, depending on airport.

Highlights of the trip

  • Intimate Gorilla Encounters: Track and spend an hour with mountain gorillas in Bwindi's Impenetrable forest, a profound, up-close experience with these rare apes.
  • Playful Golden Monkeys: Trek in Mgahinga's bamboo zones to observe energetic golden monkey troops, a lighter contrast to gorilla tracking.
  • Stunning Virunga Scenery: Hike amid volcanoes, alpine meadows, and crater lakes like Mutanda or Bunyonyi for breathtaking panoramas.

Detailed Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Kisoro

Your adventure kicks off with a pickup from Entebbe or Kigali. If from Entebbe, catch a quick flight or enjoy the drive with stops at the equator monument and local tea plantations. From Kigali, it's a smoother border-crossing ride through Rwanda's hills. Arrive in Kisoro by late afternoon, check into Mount Gahinga Lodge (or similar). Think cozy chalets with private verandas facing the Virungas. Evening briefing on tracking etiquette over a welcome dinner featuring fresh Ugandan produce.

Overnight: Mount Gahinga Lodge. Meals: Dinner.

Day 2: Golden Monkey Tracking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Rise early for breakfast, then transfer to the park gate for a ranger briefing. Embark on a 2-4 hour trek (moderate, with some steep bits) through dense bamboo to find the golden monkeys then get treated with delight in their acrobatics and social antics for an hour. Afternoon: Optional guided hike to a volcano saddle or relax with lodge yoga. Sundowners by the fire pit.

Overnight: Mount Gahinga Lodge. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 3: Scenic Drive to Bwindi and Cultural Dive

After a hearty breakfast, drive 4-5 hours to Bwindi's Buhoma sector, passing Lake Bunyonyi. Upon arrival, join a Batwa pygmy community visit where you get to learn survival skills, watch dances, and hear forest tales. Check into Buhoma Lodge, with its treehouse-style rooms and hot tubs. Evening walk or massage/spa can be arranged.

Overnight: Buhoma Lodge. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 4: Gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Fuel up with coffee and a packed breakfast, then head to the trailhead for your briefing. Trek 3-7 hours (terrain varies—muddy paths, vines) with porters and rangers to locate a habituated gorilla family. That magical hour up close: observe grooming, feeding, and family dynamics. Return to the lodge for relaxation. Open afternoon free for birding or a spa session. Dinner under the stars.

Overnight: Buhoma Lodge. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 5: Flexible Bwindi explorations and sector transfer

For enthusiasts, add a second gorilla trek (extra $800 permit). Alternatively, opt for a gentle waterfall hike, primate spotting, or village craft workshop. Mid-afternoon, transfer 2-3 hours to Bwindi's Rushaga sector for fresh scenery. Arrive at Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, perched high with epic views and enjoy the infinity pool and organic cuisine.

Overnight: Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 6: Lakeside adventures and relaxation

A more laid-back day: Boat across Lake Mutanda for hippo views, fishing demos, and island visits. Or hike nearby trails for butterflies and orchids. Back at the lodge, join a conservation talk on gorilla protection. Wrap up with a farewell barbecue, reflecting on the week's wonders.

Overnight: Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 7: Departure day

Enjoy a final breakfast, then transfer back to your chosen airport—Entebbe (flight recommended) or Kigali (scenic drive). En route, stop at a cultural center like Igongo for Ugandan artifacts and coffee tasting if time permits. Aim for afternoon flights; we ensure buffer for traffic.

Meals: Breakfast.
